This week we lost Dolly Parton at 80. In a country that agrees on very little, most folks agree Dolly was a force to be reckoned with.

Random DP anecdote: she once entered a Dolly Parton lookalike contest and lost, getting the least applause in the room.

Legend.

STORY OF THE WEEK

Eight ain't that great

We've been told for years to chase eight hours of sleep. Lies!

Columbia researchers recently analyzed ~500,000 people in a Nature study and pinned down sleep's sweet spot: 6.4 to 7.8 hours a night.

If you sleep less than that or more than that, you age faster.

The research team built 23 "aging clocks" spanning 17 organ systems, from brain scans to blood proteins. Under six hours tracked with heart disease and diabetes; over eight with lung and digestive trouble.

Why does getting enough matter? In deep sleep, your brain power-washes itself, clearing "waste proteins" tied to cognitive decline and imprinting memories.

Conversely, oversleeping typically signals fragmented, low-quality sleep or a hidden health problem.

Sweet dreams…but not too sweet.

Gym love, bot beats Bolt, plastic cookies...

Lifting Love
BYU tracked 1,700 couples and found a simple marriage booster: working out together. Pairs who did reported better communication and less stress. The No. 1 bonding activity? Plain old walking.
Bots>Bolt
At Beijing's Humanoid Robot Games, a bot named Lightning ran the 100m in 9.32 seconds, edging Usain Bolt's 9.58 record. In testing it hit 32 mph, faster than Bolt ever ran.
Macro Plastics
Scientists at Southern Illinois just turned plastic-bottle waste and corn stalks into edible cookies using engineered yeast. The "µBites" are built for NASA's menu. Cool…but I'll pass.
Buyer's Remorse
Buying yourself something should feel good. But apparently 3 in 4 Americans feel guilty buying things that spark joy. The cohort that feels least guilty about spending? Baby Boomers.
T Minus
Men's testosterone continues to quietly drop: average levels have fallen ~20% since 1990 and there are no signs of reversal. It's not weight or age - causes are still mostly a mystery.
HACK OF THE WEEK

Uncle Sam might owe you

A state government - or multiple - may be sitting on your cash.

It's called unclaimed property: old paychecks, security deposits, utility refunds, forgotten bank accounts, insurance payouts. When a company loses track of you, cash goes to the state.

Nationwide, states are holding ~$70 billion. 1 in 7 Americans has some waiting.

Go to MissingMoney.com and type in your name. Skip sites that want a fee or cut. Then look up your partner, parents, old roommate, etc.

Turns out Massachusetts is holding $5.00 for me…

SHOWER THOUGHTS

1. When you say "forward" or "back," your lips actually move in those directions.

2. A snow globe is a tiny blizzard you keep as a pet.

3. Dropping a cup of coffee wakes you up more than drinking it.

4. Wet clothes look darker, even though water has no color.

5. We've never actually heard about the perfect crime.
