This week 1,415 students at the University of California Irvine banded together to break the Guinness World Record for the largest game of Red Light, Green Light ever played.

This feat of excellence will come as no surprise to those in the lawn game community though. Between 2013-2017, UC Irvine also set the world records for Capture the Flag, Water Pistol Fighting, Dodgeball, and Balloon Tag.

Do these kids do it for the money? The fame? Neither is relevant...but NO! They do it for the love of the game. Channel that love in your pickleball match this weekend.

STORY OF THE WEEK

Tech Tiff: US v. China

image: asiatimes

It’s game-on between the US and China, and we aren't talking about the 2024 Olympic trampoline event (should we be?).

According to a new report from the Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), Earth's superpowers are in an a high-stakes competition for tech domination. Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO and current SCSP chair, believes an "L" could devastate the US.

The fight will center on three key battlegrounds: microelectronics, 5G connectivity, and artificial intelligence (AI). China is outpacing the US in each, and if it takes control of the globe's major mineral and chip-making supply chains, the gap will widen massively.

"America's military will be crippled and we will plunge into a depression. Americans will be forced to live in a world where China can turn off the technology tap." Yikes.

So what's to be done? Schmidt implores the US to:

  1. Revise innovation policies to ensure private and public sectors collaborate.
  2. Revitalize domestic manufacturing.
  3. Develop national AI governance that allows this tech to be harnessed for good.
  4. Reform military and warfighting strategies.
  5. Combat China-led pushes to embed authoritarian ideas in global tech standards.

The US tech ecosystem evolved without reference to a geopolitics. Time for a change...

Ants are taking over the world! New research estimates that there are 20 quadrillion ants on this planet, which is roughly 2.5 million ants for every human.

Depression

Depression rates are climbing, but depression treatment rates aren't. 10% of Americans reported depression in 2020; that figure was 7.3% in 2015 and 6.6% in 2005.

Breath Power

New research found that using a resistance-breathing training device (PowerBreathe) for five minutes a day was just as effective as drugs in reducing high blood pressure.

COVID Update

POTUS Biden declared COVID "over" in a 60 Minutes interview. Officials were shocked and many health experts disagreed. The government's formal stance is now unclear.

HACK OF THE WEEK

Dirty microwave? Steam it!

image: househowto

Your microwave is very likely coated with sauce, grease, and other "leftovers." When's the last time you cleaned it? Never? Shame!

Here's how to quickly transform your hotbox from soiled to sparkling with nothing more than a small bowl of water and a clean cloth:

  1. Fill the bowl with water and nuke it for 6 minutes on "high." This steams things up.
  2. Let the microwave cool for five minutes, then pull out the bowl and turntable.
  3. Wipe the inside of the microwave with the cloth. "Gunk" should come off easily!
  4. Clean the turntable with soap and water and place it back in the microwave.

No video demo necessary here - we're confident you can microwave water...

SHOWER THOUGHTS
  1. iPhone chargers should be called “Apple Juice.”
  2. Egg salad is still chicken salad.
  3. Books are dead trees tattooed.
  4. Most people are homemade.
  5. The spelling of "unnecessary" is super ironic.

Albert Einstein: “Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it’s stupid.”

Today I learned that humans experience "olfactory adaptation" and can't smell their surroundings after a few minutes. This is why you can't smell your house. (more here)
